This allows a partition or diskette to be locked, so to speak. The sectors are stored in encrypted form. The only exceptions are the boot sector, the FAT sectors and the root directory. The memory-resident programme encrypts data during writing and decrypts it during reading in the background at operating system level, so that the loss of time is minimal. There is no way of circumventing the protection mechanism with a disk monitor.
